Day one of the West Coast Digital Fluency Intensive.
The day began with Dorothy Burt explaining the beginnings of the Manaiakalani and how it has developed over the past 10+ years. This was a reminder that this is the chance for me as a teacher to provide authentic audiences for my learners, while empowering these learners with their own voice.
Core Business Week 1 The programme for the day and all the different links to slides and discussions.
Throughout the day I have been introduced to a variety of new ideas that have shown me how chrome, drive and docs can support me in developing my planning and teaching. Having the time, within sessions, to put ideas into place has allowed me to play in the sandpit while the idea is fresh and while the support is available.
The first 'light bulb' moment came when we were shown shortcuts and tweaks for making use of the many aspects of chrome. The ‘Chalk and talk’ sessions were interactive and engaging. Here I learnt about the Omnibox, closing multiple tabs and that there are 2 different ways to copy and paste. Understanding all the underlying parts that work together when copying, pasting or formatting have me thinking about the many layers that create the digital platform. When I have the hang of theses shortcuts, I will be able to support my learners to embed them within their own learning. I will continue to develop the language that I will use when I explain and show the learners.
As the day has progressed I have tried new learning and my confidence will continue to develop as the sessions progress.
DFI Site 2019
Hi Racheal, it was great to meet you at the DFI. There was certainly a lot to work through in day 1, but it is great that your confidence built throughout the day and you felt proud of your efforts. To make things easier and more effective in out profession is key and it is certainly the ideal place to give things a try because you have support on hand. Don't hesitate to ask any questions of us at the DFI or of your facilitator when she is in your school and I am looking forward to seeing how you plan to use these new ideas with your students.
