Week 5 Devices

DFI Agenda

Devices - focuses on the devices our young people use and we will experience Learn Create Share using Chromebooks and iPads.

Reflection from last week
Discussion about time and how we manage to fit in the digital learning as well as completing the school expectations. Can it be included into math or reading groups, or teaching small groups at a time. Continue this discussion with my Hub leader and personally develop the use of apps on devices to further the inclusion within the classroom.

Cybersmart
(about being smart when connecting with the world)
Using positive words to empower the student to be smart and make smart choices in the cyber world.
Cybersmart learning needs to be a whole school focus!!
Needs to be consistent from Year 1-Year 8 and beyond. The same message and language through all the years.

The children need to be empowered to access any kind of learning on a device. Teaching through the cybersmart sessions to connect students to the devices and so they are able to access learning within the device.

Q: Should all our learners have to complete a Kawa Of Care? Children are using devices from Year 1 but are not having to do a Kawa of Care until Year 5.
Should all our learners be doing Cybersmart from NE as they have access to devices in classes and learning groups. The teachers are not being introduced to any of this so how do they know if their students or teaching is safe?
Can we embed this into the everyday curriculum form the beginning of the year?

Screencastify
Creating our own Screencastify about cybersmart.
Today was the first time that I have created my own screencastify using my own voice. This is a great way to reflect on the learning for the day. I see this as a great tool for the children to do their reflections and then visually see what they have done and next step learning.
This will also be a great tool for rewindable learning as a teacher.

I have reflected and had discussions, after all the learning from today. Yes, all our learners need to been taken through a Kawa of Care. The teachers also need to have an understanding of this so they can embed it into their teaching. Even if the school is not 1:1 devices the benefits of all students completing a Kawa of Care and then developing their Cybersmarts is important for everyone's future learning. As my screencastify discusses I will be trying to develop this within my classroom as well as personally.

  1. What a thought provoking post Rachael. I am so impressed that you went back and discussed your thoughts immediately after the DFI, because I totally agree that we all need to be on board with the Kawa of Care and as you said, if you are a Manaiakalani school, then the whole school needs to be using the Learn Create Share programme, language and care when in the classroom. It's great to read that your hub agrees. Let Madeline or I know if we can support you in any way.
